Diseases of central nervous system (encepahic and medullary) blood vessels are a public health problem throughout the world, with damaging consequences.

In Mexico as throughout Latin America, stroke constitutes the third greatest cause of death and the second greatest cause of disability, behind only traumatic injury. The past three decades have seen an increase in incidence of the disease, and a tendency for it to occur in younger and younger persons.

 

Risk factors for stroke:

  • Obesity
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Arterial hypertension
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Nicotine addiction
  • Alcoholism
  • Drug addiction
  • Connective tissue diseases
  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Hypertriglyceridemia
  • Age: 45 years or older
  • Use of hormonal contraceptives
  • Family history.

Introduction

 

Led by highly qualified specialists, the Stroke Unit is a clinic planned and organized to direct all its efforts and resources toward detection of risk factors, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation; to intervening early and following protocol in treating vascular diseases of the central nervous system.

 

Clinic Equipment:

  • Magnetic resonance diffusion, perfusion and and angioresonance, 1.5 Teslas.
  • Multislice spiral CT scanner.
  • Transcranial and extracranial Doppler.
  • Non-selective digital subtraction angiography with suite of neural-hemodynamic equipment in a white area.
  • Latest generation Carl Zeiss Pentero multiple-display transurgical microscope, with neuronavigator.
  • “Mayfield” cranial fixation equipment system.
  • “Midas Rex” cranial pneumatic drill system.
  • Ultrasonic Aspirator.
  • Complementary microsurgical equipment.
  • Microneurosurgery rooms with multiple monitors and real-time remote access.
