Neonatology Services
Introduction
Neonatology is a sub-specialty of Pediatrics, and is responsible for integrated care of newborns (from birth to 28 days.)
Approximately 10% of newborns present some problem at birth, whether it be prematurity, low birth weight, asphyxia, respiratory difficulties, infections, jaundice, or other conditions.
Information
Certified neonatologists and nurse specialists treat the needs of newborns 24 hours a day. Laboratory and Imaging departments conduct their first medical tests as needed; professionals from various specialties are on-staff and there is access to physicians from other medical centers as required, or when the parents and attending physician so authorize.
Neonatology Services cares for healthy newborns so they may achieve correct postnatal adaptation (temperature control, bathing, feeding, etc.), may spend time with mothers in their rooms and return home with them at the end of their hospital stay. Care is also given to babies with any disorder or high-risk condition: to them we offer the necessary treatments for avoiding complications and encouraging healing in an Intensive and Intermediate Neonatal Care Unit.
After the healthy newborn’s blood group is determined, there is the option of comprehensive screening to detect any of more than 50 congenital metabolic disorders; as well as auditory screening for congenital hearing loss. Newborns with health problems receive the medical tests appropriate to their individual conditions.
