Oxygen Therapy
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a therapy of breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized environment at a minimum of 1.4 atmosphere pressure (ata). This makes oxygen spread out through plasma to the whole body.
What is a Hyperbaric Chamber?
A Hyperbaric Chamber is a metal-acrylic container with an airtight closing devise that works with up to 3 atmospheres of pressure for therapeutic purposes.
How does it work?
The Hyperbaric Chamber is pressurized with air at a 33-feet depth (10 meters) so the pressure of the oxygen being breathed doubles.
Each lung full of air is receiving the double of oxygen molecules impacting against the air sacs’ membranes. This is like breathing 42% oxygen at two atmospheres of pressure (2 ata). Therefore, we can say that an individual is breathing a 42%.
HBOT Effects
The HBOT-induced hyperoxia provides immediate support to any tissues that may lack oxygen or perfussion in the areas of circulatory compromise allowing for the bioenergetical standardization of breathing and production of ATP cell energy. It fosters the creation of new blood.
-
HBOT has the best tissue oxygenating action known.
-
HBOT activates biosynthetic and refreshing processes as an immediate indirect response including the formation of new capillary blood vessels and collagen, and fostering wound healing.
-
HBOT activates anti-microbial, anti-mycotic, and anti-viral defenses by favoring the function of leucocytes (white blood cells) and the oxidative destruction of bacteria.
Moreover, HBOT causes the inhibition and deactivation of toxins in infections caused by anaerobic organisms (gangrene). It helps fighting all kinds of infections resisting antibiotic treatments.
It stimulates the immune system. It increases anti-oxidant defenses. Enhances nerve drive by affecting neurotransmitter synthesis. And it also has an anti-stress effect.
Hospital Puerta de Hierro has a new-model single hyperbaric chamber that is certified and includes all the safety measures required to provide customized care to our patients.
HBOT basic indications:
1.Air Embolism
2.Decompression Sickness
3.Carbon Monoxide Intoxication
4.Non-Hemorrhagic Brain Vascular Disorders
5.Gas Gangrene
6.Anemia
7.Burns
8.Traumatic Ischemia
9.Compression Fracture (Compartimental Syndrome)
10.Chronic Refractory Osteomyelitis
11.Compromised Grafts
12.Soft Tissue Necrotizing Infections (Fournier’s Gangrene)
13.Bone Radio-Necrosis
14.Intracraneal Abscess
