Hemodialysis Unit
Introduction
Hemodialysis is purification of the blood through an artificial kidney, which functions by means of a filter containing thousands of microscopic fibers that permit excess water and impurities to be removed from the blood and passed through a dialysing solution in order to eliminate circulating toxins from the body.
Hemodialysis is effected in patients with acute or chronic renal failure, as an auxiliary treatment for kidney disease, or for complications rising from any other pathology. Once the diagnosis is made, patient and physician should asses the current existing alternatives, which are:
- Peritoneal dialysis
- Hemodialysis
